Milton Crew Prepares for Fall Season

The Friends of Milton Crew provide an update on the upcoming fall season and the new coaches.

The following release was submitted by Frank Schroth, Friends of Milton Crew communications, regarding the upcoming fall crew season.

First, we will offer two programs this fall: an experienced rower program and a novice program.  For experienced rowers – last season's team members and new members with at least one year's experience – the program will be an intensive, six day per week program designed to get the team competing on the water in as many regattas as the coaches feel practical, including the state championships to be held on October 30.

The novice program will also run six days a week, but will focus on land-based training emphasizing rowing technique, endurance and fitness. For the novices, we expect water training to take place later in the season. We expect the novice team will participate in fewer regattas than the experienced team, but will row in the state championships.

The cost for all members will, once again, be $700.  Both programs begin on September 6.

Second, we are excited to announce new coaches:  James Duguay, an award-winning rower with UMass, is a veteran of the Head of the Charles, the New England Rowing Championships and the ECACs. He has also raced with the Penn Athletic Club and Merrimack River Rowing Association.

Megan Getman, an experienced rower and current rowing coach at the well-regarded Community Rowing Inc. (CRI) in Brighton, will join Duguay.

Lastly, John Rhee, President of the Friends of Milton Crew, an experienced rower, coach and crew referee, will assist in coaching this year.

We are very excited to have these three terrific coaches lead our team.

The Board thought very highly of Coach Tim Huth and Coach Ed McCormick, and we know you did as well.  Tim and Ed were excellent mentors for our young team and did a terrific job last spring. We had hoped to bring them both back to spearhead the first fall season for our team and lead us into the spring. However, Tim had an opportunity in his field of study in Maine and told us last week that he had to take it.  Ed, too, found a terrific full-time job and coaching opportunity that he couldn't turn down. We wish them both well.

The Milton Yacht Club is welcoming us back to row out of this fall. We had hoped to have our new Neponset Park dock facility would be completed for this fall's season.  Despite a great deal of effort and substantial progress, the dock and dockside facilities are not yet in place. We expect that Neponset will be ready for the spring and are very grateful to the Yacht Club's support of Milton Crew.

The Board and the school system are dedicated to the continued growth of our team and the support from everyone at Milton High and the school system has been tremendous. We especially want to thank the folks who have recently attended our meetings and provided their advice and assistance.

We look forward to seeing you soon. Please come out for the fall and encourage experienced and novice rowers to sign up and get involved in Milton Crew. Note we will be present at the freshman sports orientation on Monday at the high school starting at 4 p.m.
