Milton Delays Vote On Back-To-School Plan To Thursday

School officials said the delay will allow for more time to evaluate the redeveloped "Hybrid/Remote Choice" model.

MILTON, MA — The Milton School Committee's meeting to vote on a school reopening plan has been moved to Thursday to allow for more time to review a revamped "Hybrid/Remote Choice" model for when students are scheduled to return to school on Sept. 14.

The school committee meeting, which was originally scheduled for Monday, will now be Thursday night at 7.

School officials said it was determined that previous models would not "meet our mission of providing an education that is equitable, high-quality, and engaging."

"We immediately began the work of developing a new 'Hybrid/Remote Choice Model,' which, if endorsed by the Milton School Committee, would allow families to choose either the Hybrid Model (similar the one previously presented on Aug. 5) or an All-Remote Model, which would be taught by Milton Public Schools teachers with Milton Public Schools curriculum," Superintendent of Schools Mary Gormley said in a joint statement with assistant superintendents Dr. Karen Spaulding and Dr. Glenn Pavlicek. "The one possible exception to this could be at Milton High School where every effort will be made to use MPS teachers and curriculum, but specialized courses might require an online option."

Officials details of the new plan will be provided this week on the town's Return to School website.

This recommendation and vote will determine how the Milton Public Schools intends to begin the school year ahead of the state's new deadline for plans on Friday.

"We appreciate the feedback from our educators and staff as well as the community on the Return to School plan and all of the questions, concerns, and ideas you have shared this summer through the Return to School website, online surveys, Citizens’ Speak, responses to surveys distributed at food pickups, and emails to the Milton School Committee and MPS leadership," the Superintendent's Office statement said. "We have considered all of your feedback as we continue to receive new information from the state and ongoing guidance from our Return to School Task Force."
