Milton Native Graduates From Wheelock College

Milton native Eva Roberts is driven by her desire to make quality education accessible to every child from all walks of life. At Wheelock, Roberts found an institution whose mission to improve the lives of children and families aligns with her professional and personal goals.

Roberts will graduate from Wheelock with a Bachelors of Arts in Performing Arts, a Massachusetts Teaching License in Elementary Education Grades 1-6, and a minor in Autism Studies.

Wheelock was the best choice for studying elementary education, according to Roberts. “The faculty in the Elementary Education Department really think and teach about all the facets of education from social justice to multiculturalism,” said Roberts. “They ask students to constantly reflect on their teaching practice and philosophy.”

In addition to opportunities for reflection, Roberts says Wheelock has also provided her with invaluable experience in the classroom. “I was able to work at the Mission Hill School in Jamaica Plain and the Heath School in Brookline. In both places I was able to test my teaching knowledge and skills and develop deep connections with students, teachers, and the school communities,” she said. Roberts was able to incorporate her love for the performing arts into elementary education by working with third graders at the Condon School in South Boston, where she focused on strengthening literacy skills by utilizing drama.

Aside from her work within the classroom, Roberts felt being a Peer Tutor was her greatest accomplishment at Wheelock. Her work ethic and passion made her shine in her position as a Peer Tutor and led her to further develop her leadership skills by becoming a Bridge Assistant for the Wheelock Bridge Program, which gives first-year students an opportunity to transition into Wheelock’s community before the academic year starts.

Being a Bridge Assistant was not the only time Roberts gave back to her community. During her junior year, Roberts took advantage of the international service-learning opportunities at Wheelock and traveled to Germany for the class Learning from the Holocaust. The learning experience explores the causes and effects of genocide on survivors, perpetrators, and their children through course work and international travel, service, and experiential learning. Roberts learned a great deal from the course, including “…the effects of the holocaust in many different lights: through the eyes of victims, perpetrators, and how it has shaped the country’s educational and political environment.”

Upon graduation, Roberts will be attending Simmons College’s Masters of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language Program. She hopes to eventually have her own classroom and have the opportunity to watch her students learn, grow, and succeed.
