Renewable Energy- An Opportunity to Find A Purpose
The best time to do something about our energy future has past, the second best time is now.

Making the decision to increase the use of renewable energy in your life will impact your community in more ways than you might imagine and could likely define your purpose.
With the current hyper focus on climate change (the ravages we fear) and the urgency to do something about it, opportunities abound for each of us to affect change by taking action, even small incremental ones. In truth, I grew up in an environment where I was taught very early that small actions taken consistently add up to big results. This saying which conveys that notion, “One, one potato full basket,” would be quite familiar to those of us who were raised in the Caribbean Islands. The idea that one, with his heart and mind vested in a goal and acting on it can indeed achieve that which one seeks.
I have accepted that I have a role to play, how-be-it a small one, in the great climate change debate that is happening now. I have decided that I have a responsibility to perform the role as the advocate for the change to the use of renewable energy in my circles. I think that for many of us the use of renewable energy in our homes is simply one of the most meaningful decisions we can make that will have far-reaching impact beyond our front door. The fossil fuel industry will of course continue to propagate the negatives but I insist “Don’t be afraid of renewable energy.“ Let’s make #2030NOW be our guide.

In truth, I have been practicing in this advocacy role for about a year now. The experience has been a mix bag of yes, no and maybe later to the adoption of alternative energy. This past winter was the coldest I have experienced since moving to the Northeast in 1990. And yet, the strong urge to refine my role kept me out there for eight months starting in September 2013 meeting and interacting with folks gagging their interest and in fact persuading some to choose alternative energy.
I have visited towns with absolutely no natural gas infrastructure, seen newly built homes with antiquated exterior wood burning stoves and old oil burning heating systems everywhere I went. I have talked with folks who are frustrated with the high cost of heating oil, people who are converting from gas heat to oil heat because of the fear of gas explosion, quite an unusual switch today. You, as a utility customer, can this moment choose to have your energy supplier be a renewable energy company without changing your current delivery company. This action is so simple and yet so profound.

The best time to do something about our energy future has past, the second best time is now, and in today’s fast pace environment late adapters are usually the losers. We must take the right actions on climate change now or we will all be losers.
