Smoke from Canadian Wildfires Cloud Milton
Massachusetts DEP places air quality warning on eastern half of the state while local fire departments field calls of smoke
The faint smell and hazy look of smoke could be seen around Milton this afternoon, and it wasn't caused by an increase in Memorial Day grilling. The smoke, which prompted calls to the Milton Fire Department from across town, was caused by a cluster of wildfires burning north of Montreal, Canada.
Between 12 and 2 p.m. on Monday, the Milton Fire Department received at least three calls from residents reporting smoke. Firefighter Jason Hagloff, who was on duty at the Fire Department Headquarters today, said the department responded to the calls like any other report. He said the department was aware of the situation in Quebec. Hagloff added that the haze they saw in Milton was much lighter than they typically see at fires.
Wind has pushed the smoke cloud down the coast of the United States including the eastern portion on Massachusetts. The smoke prompted the state Department of Environmental Protection to issue an air quality warning that includes the eastern part of Norfolk County. The warning, which was issued early this afternoon, will be in effect until 8 p.m.
