Walpole Experience Pays Off Against Milton

The Milton High girls soccer team drops to 1-4 with loss to the Rebels.

At some point Brian Borde’s girls soccer team will be the senior-laden squad that makes the experienced plays that win again instead of making the inexperienced plays that can win or lose a tough Bay State Conference game.

Borde watched Walpole, with a plethora of seniors and upperclasswomen, run away from his Wildcats with a pair of goals in the second half in the Rebels 2-0 victory last night at Brooks Field.

“They’ve got 12 seniors on their team and eight of them started. They are senior-oriented team,” said Borde. “We started one senior, so we are trying to get to that point in two or three years. The girls gave a good effort tonight.”

Ella McMackin scored a goal and had an assist, while Abby McMackin notched the game-winner for the Rebels almost midway through the second half.

The Rebels were putting pressure on the Wildcats defensive front all net with several rushes, but it looked like Milton would have the best scoring chance early in the second half. Courtney Ware put a touch on a ball that beat the goalie from the top of the right box, but the ball had a long way to travel to get to the net and a Rebels defender came back into the play to touch the ball out of the box and away from the goal line.

Ellla McMackin lead a charge back up the field and she was able to knock the ball away from the Wildcats goalie and Abby McMackin hammered it into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.

“This is our league,” said Borde. “The league doesn’t take much if you make one mistake then its unforgiving.”

The Rebels got their second goal of the night when Ella McMackin took the ball in Wildcats territory and raced past her defender and went far side with 4:30 left into the game for the insurance goal.

Ware had two great opportunites to score in the second half, but her attempts were on the unlucky side as they bounced wide of the net. Kendall Stanley ripped a good shot from 30 yards out, but the Rebels’ goalie was there to gobble it up.

Milton now moves to 1-4 on the season.
