The Needham Historical Society is pleased to present Letters Home Part I on Sunday March 22 and Part II on Sunday April 19 at 2-4 p.m. The two-part program features excerpts from a collection of 184 letters written by Civil War soldier George W. Harwood to his family in North Brookfield, MA. Harwood served in the MA 36th Regiment of Volunteers in the Ninth Army under General Burnside. His service took him from Maryland to Kentucky to Mississippi to Tennessee and back to Virginia. He shares his experiences as a private when he enlisted, promotion to Sergeant and later Lieutenant. Jan and Dave Drake have travelled to the places where the letters were written to provide visual context for the letters and an understanding of how the MA 36th Regiment’s assignments related to the overall Civil War strategy and the experiences of the men who served and their families. The Needham Historical Society is located at 1147 Central Ave. For directions see needhamhistory.org or call 781-455-8860.
