MATTHEW R. LEIBOWITZ, MD, NAMED CHIEF, INFECTIOUS DISEASES AT NEWTON-WELLESLEY HOSPITAL

Needham Resident Joins NWH

Matthew R. Leibowitz, MD, has been named Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Leibowitz succeeds Dr. Michael A. Lew, who recently stepped down after serving with distinction for the last two decades.

Since 1996, Dr. Leibowitz has been on the medical staff of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he served as Associate Chief of Clinical Services in the Division of Infectious Diseases. During his tenure at UCLA, he participated on numerous hospital committees and served as the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program Director.

“Dr. Leibowitz is an outstanding clinician, dedicated teacher, and proven administrator and leader,” said Lawrence S. Friedman, MD, Anton R. Fried MD Chair, Department of Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “We are honored to have him join the Newton-Wellesley Hospital family.”

Dr. Leibowitz received an AB in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University and an MD from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He completed an internship and residency in medicine at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston, where he also served as Chief Resident under Dr. Robert Moellering, a renowned infectious disease expert. He completed a fellowship at the UCLA Multicampus Training Program in Infectious Diseases in Los Angeles, CA.

As an active member of the teaching faculty at UCLA with the rank of Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Medicine, Dr. Leibowitz has presented nearly 300 lectures on a wide range of infectious diseases topics and has presented regionally and nationally as an invited lecturer.

Dr. Leibowitz is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the HIV Medical Association of IDSA, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association and is an ad hoc Reviewer for Clinical Infectious Diseases.

He resides in Needham.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a member of Partners HealthCare, provides a wide range of services, including medical, surgical, obstetrical, orthopaedic, neonatal, pediatric and psychiatric care. Newton-Wellesley has been serving its community for over a century. The medical staff of the Hospital includes nearly 1,000 physicians practicing a full range of specialties.
