Needham Coronavirus: Briarwood Rehab Center Has Positive Case
An 88-year-old resident and a staff member tested positive for the coronavirus.
NEEDHAM, MA — A resident and a staff member at the Briarwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center tested positive for the new coronavirus. The resident is 88-year-old and was admitted to a local hospital on Friday, according to center administrator David Cohen.
In a statement released on Monday, Cohen said no other residents at the center have tested positive. The resident with COVID-19 has returned to the center and is receiving care according to CDC guidelines, Cohen said. The staff member who tested positive, along with any other staffers they had contact with, have self-quarantined.
"No residents are being moved out of Briarwood," the statement reads.

The center will be monitoring residents for symptoms of the virus and screening employees daily, according to the statement. Since March 11, visitation to the center has been restricted.
The Briarwood cases come as Gov. Bakers announced on Monday that the "surge" in coronavirus patients in Massachusetts is expected in mid-April. Baker said that state received a shipment of medical supplies from the national strategic stockpile and expects 1,000 ventilators in early April.
