Needham Girls Tracksters Capture National Championship in Greensboro

The girls earned the championship after winning the distance medley relay event.

The Needham High School girls distance medley relay team captured a national championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet on Sunday.

Olivia Corkery, Kaleigh Hughes, Sarah Armstrong and Margie Cullen, represented Needham in the track event in which four athletes compete as part of a relay.

The distance medley relay is made up of a 1200 meter leg (three laps on a standard 400 meter track), a 400 meter leg (one lap), an 800 meter leg (two laps), and a 1600 meter leg (four laps) in that order. The total distance run is 4000 meters.

Hughes (3:35), Corkery (0:59), Armstrong (2:19) and Cullen (4:58) combined to run an impressive 11:51.09 to secure a first place finish.

In addition to being named national champions, each of the four girls were named All-Americans for excelling at their craft.

Needham’s athletic achievement marks the school’s second championship of the week. The boy’s volleyball team captured a state championship earlier in the week.
