Smulowitz Thanks Supporters after State Senate Loss
Needham Democrat congratulates campaign staff at Acapulcos Restaurant
On a night when Peter Smulowitz had to concede the State Senate election to his opponent, Richard Ross, the mood among his supporters was sad, but optimistic.
"I don't believe things are over," said Jeanette Brown, a Smulowitz supporter who gathered with others at Acapulcos Restaurant on Highland Ave. "Richard Ross ran a good campaign, but Peter and his ideas will continue on. There's still work to do."
Entering the room shortly after 9 p.m., Smulowitz thanked those gathered for their hard work and continued support.

"I know all of you are here and part of this because you believe in our ability to bring progress to the Commonwealth, to really use our compassion, our convictions to make a difference. For that I will never be ashamed," Smulowitz said when addressing his loss.
Rebecca Gewirtz, Director of Government Relations and Political Action for the National Association of Social Workers, and a dedicated champion of Smulowitz, also believed that the campaign was a well-fought one.

"We're really proud of everyone. This did not go in the direction we liked, but we are so proud of all of you and the efforts you put in," she told the crowd.
When asked if she knew what the future held for Smulowitz, Gewirtz replied, "You'd have to ask Peter that, but I think he has a big, bright future ahead of him."
Smulowitz himself would not commit to what lies ahead, instead focusing on tonight's outcome.
"All I'm doing right now is thanking my supporters, family and friends, and that's what I'm thinking about," Smulowitz told Needham Patch. "I'm settling down right now and rejoining my family."
Smulowitz did relate that he was extremely proud of his campaign and what was accomplished.
"This campaign represents people who really believe in ideas to make the Commonwealth better," he said. "I'm happy to be a part of that and there are many others here who share the same progressive ideas."
