MBTA replaces South Coast Rail trains with shuttles next weekend (southcoasttoday.com) — New Bedford riders on South Coast Rail to Boston will need to use shuttle buses instead of trains on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, due to MBTA track work. Shuttles will run between New Bedford and Middleboro, with special instructions for anyone heading to East Taunton, before regular train service resumes Oct. 5.

New Bedford Harbor turns red for wastewater dye study (newbedfordlight.org) — New Bedford's harbor recently turned red as state researchers released harmless dye into the city's wastewater outfall to track how treated sewage moves through Buzzards Bay and nearby shellfish areas. The study's results could shape future rules, costly sewer upgrades, and how often local oyster farms and harbor waters face closures after heavy rain and combined sewer overflows.
   

3. New Bedford Family Dollar closing is both downtown loss and opportunity (newbedfordlight.org) — Downtown New Bedford has lost its last discount grocery option with the closure of Family Dollar on Purchase Street, deepening the neighborhood's food and convenience-store desert for seniors and residents without cars. At the same time, the historic four-story Saltmarsh building is now for sale, drawing serious interest and sparking discussion about whether new shops, housing, or even a small grocery could reshape the city's core.
   

4. New Bedford Fire Officers Among 13 Towns, Cities To Finish Massachusetts Fire Officer Course (newbedfordguide.com) — New Bedford firefighters have completed the state's intensive Fire Officer II course, sharpening their leadership and incident command skills at no cost to the city. Alongside peers from 12 other communities, these front-line supervisors trained for more than 60 hours to better manage emergencies, personnel, and community responsibilities back home.
