Fire At Newton Crowne Plaza Hotel Closed I-90 Ramp For 2 Hrs

Newton fire and police responded to a 2-alarm fire at the Newton Crowne Plaza Hotel, but cleanup forced them to close the ramp for hours.

NEWTON, MA — The I-90 Westbound off-ramp to exit 17 in is now reopened, but for more than two hours it was closed to traffic as the Newton Fire department worked to clean up after a 2-alarm fire and the ensuing smoke at the Crowne Plaza hotel on Washington Street.

Newton Fire Department shared photos of the charred hotel room where the fire started on the ninth floor. The fire is still under investigation.

Traffic was backed up in Newton Corner and police and fire were asking people steer clear from about 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

State Troopers predicted it would be a while. Earlier this afternoon Newton Fire and police and ambulances responded to the hotel for a report of a fire on the ninth floor at the hotel. The second alarm struck at 12:53 p.m. Newton fire officials said shortly after the fire had been put out. However after multiple searches to make sure everyone as ok on the affected floors, firefighters were working on getting the smoke out, bringing in fans to help with that on the ninth floor.

Fire officials said no one was reported injured. Though, one person was reportedly transported in an ambulance just after 1:30 p.m.

Washington Street westbound was shut down at Bacon. Fire officials were asking drivers to avoid the area.
Fire and police also said they would be redirecting traffic up Pearl Street so traffic didn't back up there.

This comes a day after Newton Fire Department had to respond to a heavy house fire on Centre Street.
