The Newton Cultural Alliance highlights our member events happening around Newton this week. Enjoy a wonderful winter week of arts and culture!

West Suburban YMCA presents Poetry Night on Friday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. at their location at 276 Church Street, Newton. Join the West Suburban YMCA for Poetry Night! This event features readings by two local poets, then guests are invited to participate in the open mic portion of the evening to share their own written work. This event is FREE and open to the public. Poetry Night occurs on the first Friday of every month. More info at www.wsymca.org.

Historic Newton presents a Free Weekend at its museums on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Jackson Homestead and Museum, 527 Washington Street, and the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds, 286 Waverley Avenue, Newton. Everyone is invited to enjoy FREE admission to Historic Newton’s museums this weekend! More info at historicnewton.org.

Suzuki School of Newton presents its Student Solo Recitals on Saturday, March 7, at 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the United Parish of Auburndale, 64 Hancock Street, Auburndale. Enjoy the wonderful accomplishments of violin, viola, cello, piano, flute, guitar, and harp students from the Suzuki School of Newton. Students will present their polished pieces in two solo recitals: one beginning at 3:00 p.m. and a second beginning at 4:30 p.m. Student solo recitals will also be held on Sunday, March 8, at 3:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. at the Scandinavian Cultural Center, 206 Waltham Street, West Newton. Newton Free Library presents Thoreau Piano Trio: A Study in Light and Dark on Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m. in their Druker Auditorium, 330 Homer Street, Newton. Susan Jensen, violin, Darry Dolezal, cello, and Paul Jacobs, piano, are the Thoreau Piano Trio. Join them as they return to perform a program of masterworks both brooding and brilliant, including Beethoven’s Trio in E-Flat, Op. 70, No. 2, and Mendelssohn’s great D Minor Trio. NewTV presents the Ocllo Mason: “Changing Seasons” Gallery Reception on Wednesday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the NewTV studio, 23 Needham Street, Newton. Join NewTV for a gallery reception for artist Ocllo Mason’s exhibit “Changing Seasons.” There will be wine and cheese and the chance to speak with the artist about her painting.
