During February vacation 17 sophomores, led by History teacher Jennifer Mingus, from Mount Alvernia High School in Newton participated in the Close Up program in Washington, D.C.. For five days, the girls learned about our nation’s government and history. They met representatives from the offices of Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III and Senator Elizabeth Warren. They visited museums, such as the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, memorials and participated in workshops that explored historical and political themes.
For sophomore Bridget Rowan of West Roxbury, the program made a strong impression.
“Close Up program was honestly a life changing experience. From meeting other students from across the country to being able to get a close up view of the Lincoln Memorial, the leaders and workshops were truly amazing and I’ll forever remember it,” said Rowan.

The sophomores also had the opportunity to participate in a mock congress and political debate. Not only did this enable them to hear a wide range of viewpoints, but they met students from all over the nation and learned more about our country’s vast culture.
“This program was truly a once in a lifetime experience. It gave me a whole new perspective on what I might to be as I grow up. It really gives us an opportunity to interact with others and learn more about our country and its history,”reflected Michaela Finn ’15 of West Roxbury.

Upon returning from this experience, the 10th graders reflected on what they learned and shared their insights with the 9th grade to encourage them to become involved with the program next year.
