Newton Looks At Calling On Congress To Investigate Trump Impeachment

Newton is poised to join the growing number of communities calling on Congress to investigate impeaching the president.

NEWTON, MA — A rally Wednesday night outside of City Hall lead to a packed public hearing with people taking to the podium to let officials know just how they felt about whether the city should join the growing number of cities and towns calling on Congress to investigate the president for possible impeachment.

On the table is a nonbinding resolution asking Congress to launch an investigation into whether President Donald Trump has violated the Constitution and thus begin the impeachment process.

The City Council's Programs and Services's Committee was scheduled to vote following the hearing. But residents will have until June 19 to sway their councilors when the resolution goes to the full council for the official vote.

The movement to impeach the 45th president of the United States is gaining momentum across the country. Brookline recently called for Congress to launch an investigation, as did Cambridge and Alameda, California. The main impeachable offense to look at? Violations of the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution, said Brookline's petitioners.

City Councilor Emily Norton tweeted from the rally:
