Newton Police To Host First Open House
Catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the Newton Police Station on May 10.

NEWTON, MA — Ever wonder what a booking room and jail cells look like? Or what happens in the dispatch room? Well, the Newton Police are inviting residents to come check out the police station next month and find out. The police department is hosting its first Open House May 10.
The plan is to bring as many people into the station and let them see how the police work.
"We’re going to have guided tours, we'll go through the detective bureau, we'll take them through dispatch and a fake booking process with finger printing if they want. And we'll have a touch truck out back," said Officer Justin Lau.

The Open House is part of an effort for more police community outreach in the city. Last year Newton made a special position within the department just for community outreach work, Officer Brett Ferolito is the main community outreach officer and this year Newton added to that team with Lau.
The event will be geared for anyone curious about the police station and will be family friendly.

"We’d like to bring the public into the headquarters and show them what we’re all about," said Lau.
The chief is planning to speak outside around 6 or 6:30 p.m weather permitting but the main hub will be the police station's community room where there will handouts for residents from domestic violence awareness to elderly services available. And the guided tours will start from the community room every half hour from there.
There will also be snacks.
