Newton Police Warn of Treasury Scam

Callers soliciting money have reportedly claimed to work for the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Newton, MA – Police in Newton are warning of an emerging scam involving callers identifying themselves as members of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

According to police, these callers have informed residents that they owe money to the U.S. Treasury and attempted to solicit money from them.

This is not the first time Newton residents have been the target of a phone scam. Earlier this year, police warned of callers claiming to be IRS employees and one resident reported she was scammed by a caller telling her to pay her grandson's bail in iTunes gift cards.

Police caution residents to be wary of phone calls where an individual asks for money or personal identifying information such as date of birth, checking account numbers or social security information.

In cases where someone asks for personal information over the phone, hang up with the caller and reach out to the main business line of the organization they identify with to confirm their employment.
