Looking Beautiful...

Thought and Poem

Thought and Poem

Oh…do you remember how we allowed the trends of the times we lived in to dictate how we should do our hair so that we could leave our houses knowing we fit in with the rest of our peers?

I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights I have had because I went to bed with a head full of little pink curlers or the black ones with the brushes in them. Might this have explained the reason for my on-going headaches? Possibly! I never understood why my mother insisted I do this because the curls didn’t hold for more than twenty minutes after I took the hair-rollers out and if it rained my hair wouldn’t curl at all but remained damp and frizzed up.

It seemed that my mother was more concerned about what my hair looked like than I did. I would have preferred to tie it back or just leave it straight. But nooooo, Mom wanted me to have a head full of curls like the rest of the girls in the neighborhood so she made me put curlers in my hair every night. When curls didn’t come she made me get a hair- perm and made me roll my hair tighter. At times this routine could be painful. And if that wasn’t painful enough, her comments added to the low image I had of myself. Mother repeatedly told me that you have to suffer to be beautiful. After 10 years of curling my hair every night, hadn’t I suffered enough already?

In my lifetime I have looked like the tap dancing Shirley Temple, the Flintstones’ Pebble, the gun toting Annie Oakley, soul-singers Diana Ross and the Supremes, tennis playing Dorothy Hamill, or movie actress Julie Andrews. But today I am happy to say I look like ME and wear my hair MY way which is anyway it looks when I get out of bed in the morning!

Looking Beautiful...

How our hair looks at the start of each day...
Tends to make a difference if our day will turn out okay...
If it is raining and our hair frizzes up...
We might have that urge to throw our hands in the air and give up.

If we’ve dyed our hair blonde but it turned green...
We might not have wanted to be seen...
But nowadays we might blend in...
Green hair seems to be the newest trend.

Sleeping on little curlers was hard to do...
But somehow we made it through...
Only to end up with a head full of little curls...
And our hair ended up looking like something belonging to another world.

It took pain to pin up our hair...
We had to endure the smell while getting perms as someone squirted the solution everywhere...
Then after a while we tired of this trend...
So we ironed our hair to make it straight again.

We brush it, we braided it, we twisted it...
We teased it, we parted it, we grew it long or we cut it...
And after a while when we got our hair looking as it should...
We left the front of the mirror knowing we were looking good!
