Firefighters battled a multi-alarm blaze on West Main Street. The center was "shut down."

NORTHBOROUGH, MA — Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire in downtown Northborough on Saturday afternoon that filled the sky with a smoke so thick it could be seen as far away as Worcester. The fire occurred at 26 West Main St. at the former site of R&T Furniture, which has been vacant for some time.

Fire departments from 10 surrounding communities, including Westborough and Shrewsbury, responded with mutual aid, to try and save the adjacent businesses from damage. Additional equipment and expertise was provided by the State Fire Marshall’s office and the fire is under investigation, according to fire officials. One minor injury to a firefighter was reported and the individual was treated at a local hospital.

Power was out for nearly 2,500 in Northborough. That's about 37 percent of customers in town, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
