Histories of the settlement house movement tend to focus on its
principle leaders, those men and women who shaped and formed the
movement. This history, as it is currently presented only tells one
perspective of the settlement house story. What about the participation
of those the settlement house leaders intended to serve? This talk will
examine the immigrant experience and their agency within the Elizabeth
Peabody House. Through the use of personal accounts and stories, this
discussion will reveal that immigrants were important actors as they
were active in their participation and interaction with the settlement
house and its residents, especially at the Elizabeth Peabody House.
