Are These Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets Lewd?

The U.S. Supreme Court may decide on whether a Pennsylvania school district should have suspended two students who wore "I (heart) boobies!" breast cancer awareness bracelets. 

The Easton Area School District in Pennsylvania suspended the girls in 2010 because they wore “I (heart) boobies!” bracelets. The school officials called the bracelets "lewd."

The girls said they were merely trying to raise awareness at their middle school and appealed the decision. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the school district’s claim and the school district, in turn, voted to appeal that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The AP reported that Superintendent John Reinhart told The Express-Times of Easton that the court “comprised administrators' abilities to intervene in what is and what is not appropriate in school.”

Easton Area Solicitor John Freund said a number of national and state organizations are backing the district’s decision. He said schools officials are “concerned about the implications of a hyper-sexualized environment,” reported Lehigh Valley Live.

Mary Catherine Roper, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, which is assisting the girls in challenging the ruling, said, "I'm just really surprised that they're so determined to fight this speech case of all speech cases... (The bracelets) didn't cause any problems in the school."

The bracelets are distributed by the nonprofit Keep A Breast Foundation of Carlsbad, CA.
