The Morrill Memorial Library, in partnership with First 
Congregational Church in Norwood, are thrilled to bring our 2026 
Artist-in-Residence to the Norwood community. Join Jorge Santiago Arce 
for a unique exploration and celebration of Puerto Rican and 
Afro-Caribbean music and culture this Spring in three separate events! All events in the series will be hosted in Pingree Hall at the First Congregational Church.
Our kick-off event will be an Afro-Caribbean Workshop focusing on the History of Percussion on Saturday, May 16 from 2:00-4:00pm.&nbsp;
Jorge presents music, dances, lore, stories, and history handed down 
for over two centuries. Participants will explore Puerto Rican Plena and
 Bomba history and rhythms, with live drumming, hands-on use of Plena 
Panderos, Guiro, Seguidor, Banao and Quinto instruments, Bomba Cuá, 
Maraca, Buleador, and Primo instruments, plus recorded music. Learn 
about the Plena and Bomba claves and rhythm variations like Sicá, Yubá, 
Holande, Cuembé, Danué, Bambule, and Hoyo Mula. And, have a great time! 
This event is recommended for adults and teens.
About the artist: Jorge Arce is a master percussionist, 
educator, singer, dancer and actor from Puerto Rico, and an icon in the 
Latin music scenes in Boston and Puerto Rico. He leads the groups Jorge 
Arce &amp; Humano, Bombazo Boricua and Raíz de Plena, performing his 
original arrangements of traditional Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena music 
and dance. His one-person show, the Afro-Caribbean Workshop, has been 
presented throughout the US and Puerto Rico since 1987 in theaters, 
libraries, schools and community events. In addition to numerous awards 
for excellence, cultural recognition, and lifetime achievement, Jorge 
also holds a Masters in Education from Harvard University.

Our second event will be a Bomba Dance Workshop on Wednesday, May 20 from 6:30-7:30pm.&nbsp;
No experience is required for this class made for beginners! Arrive 
in clothing meant for movement and everything else will be provided. 
Bomba Dance and Music is a traditional form that arrived in Puerto Rico 
from Africa in the 16th Century. The Bomba dance workshop represents a 
fun and profound way of making connections while learning to dance. Long
 and wide skirts, which are a very important dance tool, are 
traditionally worn by Bomba dancers who identify as women or girls. 
Jorge can supplement skirts if needed for any participants who would like to wear one. This workshop is recommended for adults and teens.

Open Mic Performers will have 15-minute sets. Doors open at 6:30 PM for viewers, and the festivities begin by 7:00 PM. There's a $5 cover for viewers, while performers get in free!
There is 12 performance slots and we'll use a lottery system to determine line-up. Names will be collected for the lottery at 6:15 PM. Every performer present by 6:15 PM will have an equal chance to secure a slot. If more than 12 performers enter the lottery, the first 12 names drawn from the lottery will get a slot.
We also offer optional professional filming for all musicians. For $150, we will professionally film, mix, and edit your 15-minute set, providing you with a high-quality finished video. Please let us know before your performance if you would like your set to be filmed.

our Entrepreneurship series called Building Smarter Business with AI. The program will take place on Thursday May 21, 2026 at 7PM in the Simoni Room.
Artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses operate—but 
much of the conversation around AI is confusing or overly technical. 
Please join Sandra A. Casey, MIT-trained engineer and founder of Ugabot,
 as she explains how AI can be used for small and medium-sized 
businesses (SMBs). In this practical talk, Sandra will explain what AI 
really is and how SMBs can start using it today to save time, reduce

for this fun and informative talk between Prof. Masha Raskolnikov and 
Cashman Kerr Prince, on Monday, June 8 at 6:30 pm, just
 in time for Pride Month! This event will be a hybrid format, so you can
 choose to attend in-person in the library's Simoni Room or join 
virtually via Zoom.
Who’s Ilya? Shane? Why are we talking about fictional gay hockey players?
Join us for a discussion of Heated Rivalry - the book series and the 
show. We’ll talk about what’s going on in this fictional universe and 
what our cultural obsession with it says about our universe today. There
 will be spoilers but hopefully our commentary will make them 
worthwhile. Come prepared for a fun and lively - maybe even scrappy! - 
discussion.
About our speakers:&nbsp; Norwood resident Cashman Kerr Prince
 can be found knitting through Town Meeting, involved with the Norwood 
Historical Society (where he currently serves as President), or walking 
his dog around town. While his cultural criticism usually focuses on 
music, he is excited to have this opportunity to talk about literature, 
popular culture, and arts more broadly to the library audience!&nbsp;
Masha Raskolnikov is not a Norwood Resident but is a
 fan of Norwood. She lives in Ithaca, NY, where she teaches English 
literature, including queer and trans fiction, at Cornell University. 
Like Cashman, she is often to be seen walking her dog around town. Like 
Ilya in Heated Rivalry, she hails from Russia and like Shane from Heated
 Rivalry, she is Canadian. Lately, she's been doing research and 
teaching about how books and media deemed "escapist" or "a waste of 
time" actually help us to survive.

The Back Burners are a groove-driven electric blues band shaped by decades of collective experience on major stages, sessions, and tours. Led by legendary guitarist Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar and featuring guitarist and vocalist Rocco DeRosa, bassist Marty Ballou, drummer Vinny Pagano, and harmonica player Joel Latulippe, the group shares a musical language built entirely on feel, tone, and conversation. Connections @ the Library, a monthly drop-in gathering hosted by 
Riverside Community Care on the third Wednesday of each month in the 
Morrill Memorial Library's Simoni Room. Each month highlights new ways 
to get connected, as well as focused help from a trusted local resource.
Community Connections @ the Library is designed to help residents 
learn about local resources, programs, and opportunities for personal 
growth and well-being. Meet with a community coach, enjoy friendly 
conversation, and discover ways to strengthen your connection to the

The Morrill Memorial Library, in partnership with First 
Congregational Church in Norwood, are thrilled to bring our 2026 
Artist-in-Residence to the Norwood community. Join Jorge Santiago Arce 
for a unique exploration and celebration of Puerto Rican and 
Afro-Caribbean music and culture this Spring in three separate events! All events in the series will be hosted in Pingree Hall at the First Congregational Church.
Our third event will be a Plena Dance Workshop on Wednesday, June 17 from 6:30-7:30pm.&nbsp;
No experience is required for this class made for beginners! Arrive 
in clothing meant for movement and everything else will be provided. 
Plena is a traditional Afro-Puerto dance that has been evolving since 
the beginning of the 20th century. The Plena dance Workshop is a unique 
opportunity for participants to learn traditional steps of this dance 
from Puerto Rico in a very friendly and easy fashion. Students will 
learn to appreciate the connection of this Afro-Puerto Rican dance with 
contemporary movements like hip-hop. This workshop is recommended for 
adults and teens.
About the artist: Jorge Arce is a master percussionist, 
educator, singer, dancer and actor from Puerto Rico, and an icon in the 
Latin music scenes in Boston and Puerto Rico. He leads the groups Jorge 
Arce &amp; Humano, Bombazo Boricua and Raíz de Plena, performing his 
original arrangements of traditional Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena music 
and dance. His one-person show, the Afro-Caribbean Workshop, has been 
presented throughout the US and Puerto Rico since 1987 in theaters, 
libraries, schools and community events. In addition to numerous awards 
for excellence, cultural recognition, and lifetime achievement, Jorge 
also holds a Masters in Education from Harvard University.

Ample parking is available at the First Congregational Church; an 
accessible entrance with a ramp is available from the back parking lot.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Norwood 
Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by Mass Cultural 
Council, a state agency, and the Town of Norwood. Additional funding is 
being provided by the Library Endowment Fund.
