Committee to Review Study Possible Shift in Norwood Schools Start Times

NORWOOD, MA — Is 7:40 a.m. the best time to start the day at Norwood High School? A new subcommittee plans on studying if there is a benefit in changing when the schools in Norwood ring their first bell.
Wednesday night, the school committee appointed committee members Maura Smith and Teresa Stewart to a the school start time subcommittee.
Major developments are not expected as the district prepares for incoming Superintendent David Thomson, but committee members want to start studying the issue, including a report on when Newton changed their times. The report details the impact the change had on the budget, sleep, and start times for school and after school activities.

“It’s quite a game of Jenga where you move one item and the ripple effect is there,” Smith said. “From reading about what Newton went through, it seems like it was a very long process.”
The subcommittee will likely be in the research phase until Thompson’s arrival.
