NORWOOD, MA — After nearly four decades on the job, Norwood General Manager John Carroll is calling it a day.

Carroll announced Tuesday that he will retire on or about Dec. 1. He has been the general manager since 1978.

"I have loved being a public servant. I have always done the best job I could for the people I serve. I will miss working for the citizens for Norwood and I hope they will miss me," Carroll said at Tuesday night's selectmen meeting.

Chairman William Plasko said while these types resignations are often accepted with regret, this one would be accepted with admiration, respect, and a huge thank you.

"I thank you for your contributions to this community that are too many to list. I know I've benefitted greatly from the strong moral compass you've provided and from your advice and assistance, and that's not just professionally but personally," Plasko said.

Selectman Helen Abdallah Donohue noted Carroll's worth ethic, often working weekends in addition to the regular weekday schedule. She said she was happy for Carroll's wife Penny and the time the two will be able to spend together.

"I feel like I'm going to miss you very much but for her, I'm happy this will give you some of the things you want to do together," Donahue said.

Selectman Thomas Maloney said aside from his father, Carroll is the man he admires the most.
