SCS Students Receive Awards in National Spanish Exam

Congratulations to the Winners of Medals & Certificates in the National Spanish Exam

Congratulations are in order once again. Sixteen students, over half of the 8th grade graduating class at Saint Catherine of Siena School (SCS), were recognized with Silver or Bronze Medals and received Certificates of Honor for their achievements on the National Spanish Exam. At the urging of their Spanish Teacher, Senora Paula Pelaggi, students took the nationwide exam. Silver medals were given out to L. Byrne, C. Earle, A. Hanafin, A. Lahaise, R. O'Carroll and R. Velavan. R. Coleman, K. Sullivan and C. Jeneid received Bronze Medals and Certificates of Honor were given to A. Chan, H. Exavier, M. Glavin, E. O'Keefe, K. Gillette, K. Rogers, and S. Pinto. Mr. Kevin Cassna-Buscemi, National Director of the exams, said that "attaining a medal or certificate of honor for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious...because the exams are the largest of their kind in the U.S." Twenty-two SCS students participated in the national exam back in 2016 - with over 160,000 students participating nationwide - and had similar results. After graduating from St. Catherine School, students are placed in Advanced or Spanish II because of SCS' challenging curriculum. All students, from Pre-School until 8th grade are exposed to two languages at St. Catherine's: Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
