5 Things You Need to Know Today, June 1

National Donut Day, graduation, playoffs, race fundraiser and a poker rally.

Today is Friday, June 1. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. It's National Donut Day! If you stop into any Dunkin' Donuts, you can snag yourself a free donut, provided you buy a drink, of course.
  2. This is the big day for the Class of 2012 -- commencement is this evening, starting at 5 p.m.
  3. Playoffs: Bishop Fenwick baseball defeated Newburyport in a close one yesterday, 6-5 in nine innings. The Crusaders now move to the quarterfinals Monday to play the winner of Saturday's Whittier/Watertown game. Fenwick girls' lacrosse was bumped from the postseason yesterday, however, losing to Wayland, 13-7, in the quarterfinals. Girls' tennis tatkes on North Reading today at Fenwick (3:30 p.m.) For Peabody High, the softball club lost out to Andover, 5-3, in a preliminary round game yesterday. Both baseball and girls' tennis play tomorrow -- baseball at home (4 p.m.) vs. the winner of tonight's Waltham/Lynn English game and tennis at Andover (3:30 p.m.).
  4. down at the Brown School.
  5. Poker rally at MINI: On Sunday, MINI of Peabody will be celebrating spring with its seventh-annual Poker Rally. You have to own a MINI to compete for the prizes though. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday, rally participants take off at 8:45 a.m. and return to the dealership at around 10 a.m. for brunch. Contestants will stop at four checkpoints around the North Shore, picking up a playing card at each location, with a fifth card being given out to participants at MINI of Peabody. The person with the best hand at the end of the event wins the grand prize, while the second- and third-place finishers also take home gifts.
