Patch Players of the Week

Here are the studs from Week 5 of high school football.

By Bob Holmes, Patch Correspondent

Mike Stournaras and Jack Beverly, Framingham — The young and the old combined to give the Flyers their first win of the year, beating Brookline, 27-20. And how did it happen? On a last minute 95-yard touchdown pass from freshman Jack Beverly (his fourth of the year) to senior Mike Stournaras. The two also hooked up on a 6-yard scoring play in the first half.

Jaason Lopez, Marblehead — In a dominating win over previously undefeated Beverly, the Magicians defense gets much of the credit, led by Bo Millett (two sacks) and Justin Faia (two interceptions), but it's hard to overlook the numbers Lopez put up. In the 39-7 win, Lopez ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to lift Marblehead to 5-0.

Bobby Maimaron, Duxbury — The Patriot League showdown didn't amount to much after Duxbury's senior quarterback threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more as the Green Dragons beat Silver Lake, 55-14. Maimaron has 97 career touchdowns with 0-6 Quincy next up for 5-0 Duxbury.

E.J. Perry, Andover — Make that 25 touchdown passes this fall for the BC-bound quarterback. In a 48-13 win over Methuen, Perry ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns (one for 99 yards) and threw for four more. His career total now stands at 92 touchdown passes. Next week Andover, which has won three straight, faces Haverhill.

Pedro Santiago, Haverhill — With Central Catholic ahead 10-7 in the third and driving for another score, the senior defensive back intercepted a pass and returned it 76 yards to the Central Catholic 2-yard line. Two plays later teammate J.C. Laguerre (148 yards rushing) ran it in and Haverhill took a lead it never relinquished. The win was Haverhill's first over the Raiders since 2004.

Matt McCarthy, North Reading — The senior back and Hornets' captain ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-20 win over Pentucket. The win keeps North Reading at No. 2 in the Division 2A North power ratings behind Marblehead with a 4-1 overall record.

Mike LaFrange, Falmouth — The unbeaten Clippers clinched the school's first Atlantic Coast League title since joining the league 2004, thanks in part to their senior running back. LaFrange ran for two touchdowns and scored a third on a reception to lead Falmouth past Dennis-Yarmouth, 53-13. Falmouth and Marblehead are the only undefeated teams in Division 2A.

Brendan Costa, Case — The Cardinals senior quarterback ran for 336 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 180 yards and three more scores as Case beat Seekonk, 44-14. Costa is the second-leading scorer in Division 4 and Case, after going 1-10 in 2014, improved to 4-1 this fall.

A.J. Dillon, Lawrence Academy — In a 41-21 win over Milton Academy, the Michigan-commit ran for 297 yards and five touchdowns and the Spartans improved to a perfect 3-0. Dillon has 10 touchdowns in the three wins.

Jamari Venter, Thayer Academy — The senior back ran for 378 yards and four touchdowns as the Braintree school won its first game of the season, beating Middlesex, 40-21.

John Grady and Bryce Adam, Newton North — The Grady to Adam passing combination combined for four touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers past Braintree in a wild affair, 36-33. The two teams combined for 36 points in the fourth quarter with Grady hitting Adam for both Newton North scores, including the game winner. Newton North moved to 4-1 and remains second in the Division 1 South power ratings.

Mark Willis, Joey Ford, Evan Clark, and Mitch Warren, Waltham — What, no quarterback or running back here? In a 14-6 win over Westford and its all-star quarterback Connor Degenhardt, it was the defense that stood tall and lifted the Hawks to a 3-2 record. Westford took over the ball with less than 4 minutes left but whether it was a key sack or pass break-up, the Waltham defense led by seniors Warren and Ford and juniors Willis and Clark, that came up big.

Jack Doherty, Peabody — The senior did a little bit of everything in a big 28-0 win over Lynn Classical. He caught a 10-yard scoring pass in the second quarter then added an 11-yard score in the third.

Tim Ramstrom, Natick — Defense was again the focus of a RedHawks win and their junior linebacker was key in a 28-6 victory over Dedham. Ramstrom returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and added a 22-yard scoring run on offense in the fourth quarter. The Natick defense has given up just 13 points the past two weeks with a big game against Walpole next up.
