Trial For Peabody Man Accused Of Killing Girlfriend's Dog Delayed

PEABODY, MA — Had Steven Severino, 31, of Peabody, arrived at Malden District Court Wednesday for the start of his trial on a charge of animal cruelty, he would have been greeted by protesters. But Severino's trial was moved to May 23. The protesters have vowed to return when Severino is back in court.

The group had mobilized on social media under the banner of "Justice For Coco," the dog Severino is accused of killing last year. Severino has denied the allegations, forcing the trial that was scheduled to begin with opening statements Wednesday.

Everett Police arrested Severino in September at his girlfriend's home after neighbors reported hearing what sounded like a dog yelp and an animal being thrown against a structure. Police said the dog died after suffering a broken jaw and other injuries. He has pleaded not guilty to one charge of animal cruelty.
