'Worst Roads In The City': Peabody Mayor Says Repairs Are Coming To This Busy Route

"Better days — and smoother roads — are ahead." - Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt

PEABODY, MA — Paving work to improve what Mayor Ted Bettencourt called "one of the worst roads in the city" is set to begin later this month.

Bettencourt said the planned repaving of Lowell Street from Route 1 West to the West Peabody Fire Station will begin with milling later in April and then full repaving in a two-part process.

"As many of you know, that stretch has shot to the top of the standings as one of the worst roads in the city, a fact my mother-in-law reminds me of often, and not very nicely," Bettencourt said in a community message. "With the warmer weather upon us, we can finally move forward with repaving this section."

Bettencourt said updates on exact dates for the milling and ensuing paving will be shared as soon as possible.

"I'm sorry we couldn't pave this area before winter, but we were required to wait six months after installing the new water main before any paving could begin to avoid sinking of the road," he said. "Thank you for your patience. Better days — and smoother roads — are ahead.
