PLYMOUTH, MA — Two 15-year-old Plymouth North students have been charged with attempted arson and malicious destruction of property after police said their attempts to mimic a viral video prank resulted in a damaged electrical outlet at the school. Plymouth Superintendent of Schools Gary Maestas said on Tuesday that the school would "pursue charges to the fullest extent of the law" after the prank that officials say could have caused serious damage to students and the school.

Plymouth fire and the State Marshal's Office said an investigation determined the students attempted to mimic a teen video challenge posted on TikTok in which a penny is placed in contact with the prongs of a phone charger partially inserted into an outlet — causing sparks. The Plymouth North incident resulted in the outlet shorting out.

"This action caused minor damage to the building," Plymouth police said. "However, this behavior is very dangerous and has potential to cause serious damage to property, as well as serious damage to students, staff or visitors."
