Athlete of the Week: Ashley Eccleston

Because of her willingness to tackle new challenges, Ashley Eccleston has been the first underclassmen selected as Plymouth Patch's Athlete of the Week.

Ashley Eccleston never touched a lacrosse stick prior to this season. Despite the lack of experience, Eccleston has been able to net playing time in goal for the Plymouth South girls varsity lacrosse squad. She is living proof that hard work and a desire to perform can propel anyone to the varsity level.

The Panthers have a young team this year, however with impressive play from Eccleston and her teammates, the second half of the season presents a great deal of potential. Eccleston’s confidence and willingness to try something new sets a fine example for young Plymouth athletes.

Congratulations to Ashley Eccleston for being the first underclassmen selected as Plymouth.Patch.com Athlete of the Week.

1) What drew you to the sport of lacrosse?

I was asked, this year, by a friend of mine to try it out and I wanted to try something new, so I went for it.

2) What do you enjoy other than athletics?

Other than sports I love to horseback ride, hang out with friends and family, and shop

3) High school is full of challenges. What is one challenge, whether on or off the field, that you were able to successfully overcome so far during your high school career?

In my high school career so far, a challenge I have overcome was in cross country. I wanted to better my times from last year, and do well in the invitationals. I was able to successfully overcome the challenge and finished 15th out of 150 in one of my invitational meets. I also got selected as an ACL all-star which was a big accomplishment for me.

4) What is it like being a sophomore goalie playing against athletes with more experience?

This being my first year makes it hard for me at times to play against these goalies that have been playing for many years. I just learn from them. I watch what they do and I try it out for myself.

5) How would you recommend an incoming freshman approach the challenges of high school?

I would tell them to stay clear of drama and to get involved. The more involved you are, whether with academics or athletics, the better your year will go. Extra curricular activities have kept me in line. Also to try your hardest because high school is important to get yourself prepared for the real world.

6) What's on your iPod these days?

On my iPod there are not very many songs, but I mostly have music that is good for running. Anything fast pace that keeps me going. One song I have on there is “Eye of the Tiger” which is one of my favorite running songs.

7) Anyone you would like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my lacrosse coaches, Coach Sheridan and Coach Graham, for helping me understand the sport and prepare me. Also I would like to say thank you to my cross country coach, Coach Addleman, for helping me through the season and making me the runner I am today. Finally I would like to thank my family for being there.
