Athlete of the Week: Matt Walsh
The Eagle's captain and catcher is Plymouth Patch's Athlete of the Week.
Baseball season is once again in full swing. The Plymouth North baseball squad is looking to surge to the top of the Atlantic Coast League. However catcher and captain Matt Walsh is hoping to be able to do a lot more than just take home the ACL title.
Walsh has worked hard to get back in shape after going under the knife this past winter. But, he says, he is “stronger than ever” and ready to be a motivational leader of the Eagles baseball team.
Walsh already has one baseball state championship under his belt, and he is working hard to make 2011 the year of his second.

What drew you to the sport of baseball?

I’ve been drawn to baseball from the time I was 2. I always had a ball and a bat in my hand and was constantly asking my dad to play catch in the yard.
What is your favorite moment in your athletic career? Could you describe it for me?
My favorite moment thus far was winning a baseball state championship as a freshman. It was even more special winning it with my uncle Dwayne as head coach, and it being his first state championship as well. It was the perfect season with the rank of seventh in the nation.
What are you future athletic goals? How about your future personal/career goals?
To earn a starting position at Franklin Pierce next year, to play in the cape cod league and then play professional baseball. Before all of these goals happen I would like to win another state championship.
What makes a successful team captain? How do you personally lead and motivate your team?
A successful captain is someone who is a role model on and off the field, hardworking, and respectful on and off the field. I lead by example and try to be as supportive as I can be to all my teammates no matter what. I always try to encourage everyone from freshmen to seniors.
What's next after graduation?
Geting ready for college ball.
What are some of your other interests, besides athletics? Why do they interest you?
Working out gets my mind off of things, and gets me ready to play. Being able to spend time with family and friends also means a lot to me. They will always be there for me.
What motivates you?
I've always been self motivated and I am working towards my dream. I had surgery on both legs in December, and through hard work I am back stronger than ever. My dad and uncle Dwayne have always helped me reach my goals and have kept me focused.
Anyone you would like to thank? Say hello to?
My parents have always been there for me through my ups and downs. They have always been there to talk to me when I needed someone. My dad coached me up until high school and always expected a high level out of me. That has helped me to become the player I am today. My mom has been my number one fan. I can always hear her cheering on my friends and I. She is the best mother I could ask for.Thank you to my uncle Dwayne, who is also my head coach. I know that he would do anything for me. He has been a great coach but most of all a supportive uncle. Thank you to my trainer Justin Twieraga, for helping me to recover after surgery, and getting me in the best shape possible. Coach Mac for all he has done for me on and off the field. Thank you to my brother and sisters for always being there to support me through my sports.
