Community Preservation Act Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Community Preservation Act (CPA) celebrated its 10th anniversary by honoring 10 individuals from across the Commonwealth with the Robert Kuehn CPA Award.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Community Preservation Act (CPA) in Massachusetts and the Community Preservation Coalition celebrated its success by honoring 10 individuals from across the Commonwealth with the Robert Kuehn CPA Award.
Bob Kuehn was a tireless advocate for affordable housing and historic preservation and was actively involved in the passing of the Community Preservation Act. As one of the founders and main supporters of the Community Preservation Coalition, he served as Vice Chair of its Steering Committee until his death in 2006.
This award recognized ten individuals who have been significant contributors to the success of CPA during its first decade. I am proud that my district is home to two hardworking individuals, Barbara Schneider of Falmouth and Rick Burnet of Plympton, who were honored with this award during a celebration at the State House last week.
Barbara has been a member of the Falmouth CPC since its birth in 2005 and has served as both Vice-Chair and Chair of the organization. She has endorsed the vision of the CPA legislation at the state level, as well as the local level, and has provided testimony at hearings on CPA bills.
Rick has played a lead role in the town of Plympton being an active and flourishing member of CPA. He observed the successes of CPA in neighboring towns and brought what he learned about CPA best practices to his own community. Rick continues to serve on the Community Preservation Committee.
The CPA was originally signed into law in 2000 and has since been adopted by 148 cities and towns. CPA communities have preserved more than 13,300 acres of open space across the Commonwealth, provided funding for more than 4,000 affordable housing units, made more than 2,000 appropriations for historic preservation projects and completed more than 600 recreation projects.
Congratulations to Barbara and Rick and thank you to everyone involved with the Coalition for your hard work and dedication to bettering our communities.
