Must Have Tech Tips for Business

Tech tips for local business professionals.

This week I took time out of my busy schedule to work on sharpening my technology saw. I'm always looking for new ways to be more productive and efficient - especially when it involves some sort of technology. Recently I made the commitment to go paperless in my business and at home. I purchased a ScanSnap 1500 scanner (the best scanner on the market) and started leveraging Evernote - a powerful organizer that allows you to access anything, anywhere. But this week was about learning and growing - the technology field is always changing and when you run a small business (and a busy household for that matter), it's essential to stay on top of the latest consumer trends and tools.

One of the tips I picked up: divorce yourself from Internet Explorer! Seriously, write a dear John letter, leave without saying good bye, have a heart to heart, whatever it takes but stop using Internet Explorer. Start using Google Chrome immediately! I've always had it as a back up web browser but little did I know the power behind this powerful tool. It has this neat little gadget called the Chrome Web Store that allows you to download 'apps' to your browser like Facebook or Pinterest.

See something interesting on the web and want to post it on Facebook? You log on to Facebook to post the item and an hour later you realize "I need to get back to work!" Eliminate the distraction - add the Facebook add-on to your Chrome browser and simply click on the button to add something to your Facebook page - without leaving the page you're viewing!

Another great tool is Eyejot. Eyejot is a free video email program that allows you to email a short video. Email is cold and difficult to convey emotion. Video is where it's at - more people go to YouTube to search for something than Google! Want to reach those 20 & 30 something consumers? Send a video! Want to introduce yourself to a prospect and want to separate yourself from the hundreds of emails they receive in a day? Send a video!

With Eyejot, download a simple program to your desktop (you'll need a webcam) or download the app to your smart phone.
