Regular Exercise Improves Metabolic Profiles of Older Adults

Aging and lack of physical activity are two things that can increase risk for developing chronic conditions including obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. Meanwhile, diet and exercise modifications can be beneficial alternatives to standard medical treatment of these conditions. In June, a study in Human Metabolism Research looked at the effect of moderate exercise on indicators of chronic disease in elderly, sedentary individuals.

Participants performed aerobic exercise for 60 minutes three days a week for 24 weeks.  Results showed improvement in aerobic capacity and thyroid hormone levels after training.  This research provides evidence that moderate exercise can help improve the metabolic profiles, or certain markers of health indicated by blood and other tests, in elderly people.  Health clubs provide a safe and supportive environment for elderly community members to engage in moderate physical activity and improve their health and well-being.
