Coronavirus Costs Birthplace Of America Its 4th Of July Fireworks

The Plymouth July 4 Committee announced 'with a heavy heart' the decision was made Thursday to cancel the fireworks and parade.

PLYMOUTH, MA — There will be no Fourth of July fireworks or parade in the Birthplace of America due to the new coronavirus health emergency.

The committee that organizes and supports the annual celebration in Plymouth met Thursday night and informed the town of its decision to suspend public events for this year's holiday.

"This decision was made based on the current guidelines and recommendations to ensure the safety of all of our participants and volunteers, as well as local and visiting families that attend the events," the committee said in its letter. "With a heavy heart we have canceled the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks this year."

The letter said that it will use money from the support of the annual celebration to make a $1,000 donation to the Plymouth food pantry through the South Shore Community Action Council.

"During this crisis, we see a number of our local families and community businesses doing everything they can to survive financially, sometimes day to day," the committee said. "At this time, we feel that this is our chance to return the goodwill has bestowed upon us and help."
