Coronavirus: Plymouth Locks Gates At Public Parks

Group activities are prohibited at all Plymouth town parks with gates locked and parking lots blocked at many of them.

PLYMOUTH, MA — Plymouth Town Manager Melissa Arrighi announced on Wednesday that Public Works crews will lock the gates at several town parks, and block the parking lots to others, in an effort to deter all group gatherings amid the coronavirus health emergency. The measures are being in place as Arrighi said some people have continued to gather in groups in the parks despite the state's "stay-at-home" order.

"Our new way of living, practicing constant social distancing, is more important now than ever," Arrighi said. "These people are either not hearing or just not abiding by the state directive. Therefore, it is with great difficulty, frustration, and sadness that I have recommended all local parks and recreational areas be posted that they are closed to group activities."

Plymouth Public Works crews will locking gates and posting signs at Elmer Raymond, West Plymouth Recreational Facility, Forges Field, Hedges Pond Recreational Area, Manomet Recreation Area, and Emerson Park. In addition, parking lots will be blocked at Briggs, Cleft Rock, Fresh Pond, Jenny Grist Mill, Morton Park, Nelson Memorial Park, Siever Field, Stephens Field,Center Hill Preserve, and Haskell/Nook Road Park.

"There may be other public areas that follow," Arrighi said. "I understand how much frustration this will cause to our residents who have been observing social distancing and simply park in these lots so they may walk outside in the area — for that I apologize. However, in an abundance of caution, this step is necessary."
