Coronavirus: Plymouth Police To 'Disperse' Large Public Gathering

Plymouth Town Manager said police will use loud speakers to tell groups of more than 10 to break it up while on patrol.

PLYMOUTH, MA — Plymouth Town Manager Melissa Arrighi said larger public gatherings in violation of the state's stay-at-home order "cannot be tolerated" and that Plymouth police will "disperse" any crowds of more than 10 people seen congregating while officers are on patrol. The town has closed access to town parks and beaches as part of its attempts to enforce social distancing amid the new coronavirus health emergency.

"I am asking that residents and visitors abide by the importance of social distancing," Arrighi said. "As the weather improves, we understand the draw to gather on the waterfront or in public locations — this cannot be tolerated. The necessity of keeping officers safe and not putting them in unnecessary jeopardy by having them disband crowds of people is paramount.

"However, as we do see groups over 10 people together, our Plymouth Police Officers will be alert to these public gatherings while on their patrol. Police will make use of their loud-speakers to disperse any crowds and move these individuals along."

Arrighi decision to disperse crowds is being made in conjunction with Plymouth police.

"Please help protect our officers and protect the public by not gathering in groups," Arrighi said "Please do not place this undue burden on our officers who may be needed elsewhere for an emergency."

Arrighi said if these dispersal tactics are not sufficient, the town will add even stronger deterrents to public gatherings.

"If there is not compliance, then town management will be considering other possible steps through potential fining, curfews, and the like," she said.
