Tyler Hagmaier, accused of murdering Quincy College professor Vibeke Rasmussen May 5, threw himself in a river, police said.

GILL, MA — Authorities on Monday recovered a body matching that of a Plymouth man accused of murdering a college professor earlier this month.

Tyler Hagmaier, 24, allegedly stabbed Vibeke Rasmussen to death on May 5 inside her Plymouth apartment, authorities said.

On Monday, a body matching Hagmaier's description was discovered in the Connecticut River in the western Massachusetts town of Gill, police said. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the identity.

Police said Hagmaier drove to Gill after the murder and jumped in the river in an apparent suicide attempt. He was indicted on murder charges last week in case he was still alive.

Hagmaier stabbed Rasmussen over 30 times, police said. Hagmaier's DNA was found on a sweatshirt and cigarette butt inside Rasmussen's apartment on Tide View Path in Plymouth. Her murder was not random, authorities said, though a motive has not been disclosed.
