Plymouth Water Emergency Declared

A water emergency has been declared in Plymouth until further notice; some types of lawn watering and surface washing are prohibited.

PLYMOUTH, MA — A water emergency was declared in Plymouth Wednesday amid drought conditions.

Some lawn watering and surface washing are prohibited until further notice.

"The recent hot weather and lack of significant rainfall has resulted in a dramatic increase in water use and water levels well below average," town officials said in a statement.

All "non-essential" watering is prohibited, including:

  • Uses that are not required for health and safety reasons.
  • Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems.
  • Washing of vehicles other than by means of a commercial car wash, except as may be necessary for operator safety.
  • Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks.
  • The use of handheld hoses will be allowed for watering vegetable or flower gardens, shrubbery and trees during this emergency.

Fines for violating the rules start at $50 on the second offense and $100 after that.
