DETAILS:
Quincy College's Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) events are hosted by the Phlebotomy Program and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program, part of the Division of Allied Health at Quincy College. All events are free and open to the public.
Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) provides a unique opportunity to increase public understanding of and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel. MLPW, which takes place the last full week in April each year, is coordinated by American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS).
During MLPW at Quincy College, interested prospective students, parents, and community members are welcome to campus to explore Quincy College's leading edge laboratory spaces or meet with Chair of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Quincy College, Andrea McLain.
"MLP Week is an opportunity for Quincy College to recognize our students and staff and to provide an opportunity for and access to education for the South Shore celebrating the medical lab profession. Medical laboratory science professionals are vital healthcare detectives, uncovering and providing laboratory information from laboratory analyses that assist
physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as in disease monitoring or prevention (maintenance of health), " Andrea McLain, Chair of Quincy College's Medical Laboratory Technician Program.
The Quincy College Medical Laboratory Technician program consists of didactic and campus laboratory courses designed to progress the student through a two-year program and provide them with entry-level knowledge and skills to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunohematology, immunology, and phlebotomy.
Upon successful completion of the program, an Associate of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is awarded. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification examination for Medical Laboratory Technology offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry.
The Quincy College Phlebotomy Certificate Program is designed to train students to perform both routine and challenging venipunctures and capillary skin punctures on adults. Students who complete this certificate program will be well prepared for an entry level position in health care, while building a strong foundation for further academic study.
Medical Laboratory Technician and Phlebotomy students at the college are given (unpaid) training internships with local clinical partners which allow the students to apply the academic coursework from the college in a hospital, physician office, or reference laboratory setting. The internships provides students with real-world experience needed for employment as (an entry level) laboratory professional.
McLain elaborates: " We are eager to welcome the community to the Quincy and Plymouth Campuses to explore the Phlebotomy and MLT programs at Quincy College. This field of study and career path is rich with opportunities for those even with an Associates Degree or certificate."
