David Ortiz Painting Recovered By Quincy Police

Police say a man took the painting from an exhibit at the Crane Library.

QUINCY, MA — A painting of David Ortiz stolen from the Thomas Crane Public Library was recovered by police Wednesday.

Dana Bognar, 37, homeless, was arrested and charged with larceny from a building and conspiracy to commit larceny, according to the Quincy Police Department. A warrant is being sought for James Perkins, 48, of Quincy, for receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit larceny.

Police learned on May that the painting from an on-going art exhibit at the art library was stolen sometime after May 7. Wednesday, security footage of the suspect removing the point was recovered and police were told by a library worker that the man was in the library. The suspect, identified as Bognar, allegedly told police that his friend Perkins asked him to steal the painting and promised to pay him $20.

Bognar admitted to taking the painting on May 16 and gave it to Perkins. Officers were able to recover the painting from the person who has it, who was unaware that the painting was stolen.

The portrait of Big Papi, was painted by local artist Edwina Caci and has a value of about $1,000.
