Justice Department to Monitor Quincy Polling Locations

Quincy is one of 67 jurisdictions in 28 states that will be monitored by the Justice Department

QUINCY, MA — The Justice Department will be monitoring polling locations in Quincy on Election Day.

The department's Civil Rights Division announced Monday that they will sent over 500 employees to 67 jurisdictions in 28 states for Tuesday's general election. Quincy is the only community in Massachusetts that will be monitored.

“The bedrock of our democracy is the right to vote, and the Department of Justice works tirelessly to uphold that right not only on Election Day, but every day,” Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said in a release. “We enforce federal statutes related to voting through a range of activities – including filing our own litigation when the facts warrant, submitting statements of interest in private lawsuits to help explain our understanding of these laws, and providing guidance to election officials and the general public about what these laws mean and what they require."

The Justice Department will continue to operate a hotline and monitor the election as they have in the past. The department says the goal is to see to it that every eligible voter can participate in the elections to the full extent that federal law provides.

Complaints related to a disruption at a polling place should be reported immediately to local election officials. Complaints related to violence, threats of violence or intimidation at a polling place should be reported immediately to local police authorities. They should also be reported to the Justice Department after local authorities have been contacted, the department said.
