New Fore River Bridge Ready To Open

The shifting of traffic to the new bridge marks the end for the temporary bridge.

QUINCY, MA — The first cars will cross the new Fore River Bridge starting Wednesday night.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation recently announced that between the evening of Aug. 16 and morning of Aug. 17, all traffic will be shifted off the existing temporary bridge and onto the new replacement bridge. The move means the end of service for the temporary bridge and will allow crews and contractors to continue demolition operations while also moving forward with the construction of the new bridge, MassDOT said.

There will be one lane of traffic each way, with two lanes each way coming by Oct. 1.

The bridge has been down to one lane each way since June 2 when MassDOT workers began operations to remove half of the existing temporary bridge from service to allow for the completion of the new approach spans.

Full beneficial use of the bridge is expected to be obtained by the spring of 2018.
