📰 News we're reading
1. Massachusetts high court rules against saints statues (christianpure.com) — Massachusetts' highest court has temporarily blocked Quincy from placing large statues of Catholic saints outside its new public safety building, finding they likely amount to unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. Quincy residents who sued, along with civil-liberties groups, call it a win for religious neutrality, while Mayor Thomas Koch and the city's lawyers vow to keep fighting to honor police and firefighters.

2. William P. Murray (thequincysun.com) — Quincy is remembering acclaimed writer William Patrick Murray, a longtime North Quincy resident and creator of Marvel's cult-favorite Squirrel Girl, who passed away suddenly on August 25. Known for his Doc Savage novels, Destroyer series work, and deep ties to pulp and comics fandom, he also traveled widely, wrote extensively on pop culture, and remained connected to the community he called home.

3. Thomas J. Synan, 91 (thequincysun.com) — Quincy is mourning longtime resident Thomas J. Synan, a former priest, social worker, and devoted YMCA volunteer whose life of service touched many across the community. Visiting hours are Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Keohane Funeral Home on Hancock Street, with a Celebration of Life and Funeral Mass Thursday at St. John's Church, followed by burial at Pine Hill Cemetery, all in Quincy.

4. Massachusetts State Trooper dishonorably discharged mid-probe into off-duty behavior (bostonherald.com) — A Massachusetts State Police trooper has been dishonorably discharged after resigning amid an investigation into undisclosed off-duty conduct, just as two other troopers face separate misconduct cases. One of them, Christopher Regan, is set for arraignment after allegedly assaulting a fellow trooper at a Quincy bar, raising fresh questions about oversight and training costs within the department.
