Quincy Bar Manager Pleads Guilty To Running Illegal Gambling Ring

Defendants took illegal bets from hundreds of people through sports betting websites, run by an offshore casino, prosecutors said.

QUINCY, MA — A bar manager from Braintree faces a $5,000 fine and two years probation after pleading guilty Monday to charges he helped run an illegal sports betting operation out of the South Side Tavern.

Sean Conroy, 41, pleaded guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to organizing and promoting illegal gambling, money laundering, registration of bets, delivering and receiving for the purpose of gambling, and conspiracy, the Patriot Ledger reported.

John Manning, 39, of Marshfield, Patrick Dolbeare, 36, of Dorchester, along with Manning's uncle, James Manning, 59 of Pembroke, and his cousin Nicholas Manning, of Dorchester were also charged in the gambling scheme.

According to police, bar owner John Manning, along Conroy and Dolbeare led the gambling ring, and James and Nicholas Manning helped. Prosecutors said the defendants took illegal bets from hundreds of gamblers through sports betting websites, run by an offshore casino and had dozens of agents working for them. Authorities said the bar was used for money laundering.

According to Attorney General Maura Healey's office, police searched seized more than $400,000 in illegal gambling money.

John Manning pleaded guilty in July to the same charges as Conroy, the Patriot Ledger reported. He was sentenced to two years probation, fined $50,000, and ordered to forfeit over $400,000 in illegal gambling earnings. Dolbeare was also found guilty and faces two year probation and was ordered to give back his earnings.
