South Shore Storm Update: Cars Trapped In Water; Flooding Ramped

Coastal flooding has hit most of the South Shore is flooded and residents are advised to stay inside and off the roads.

Flooding has become a major issue as the snowstorm continues to hammer down on Quincy and the South Shore.

At 12:45 p.m., Brewster Ambulance reported a trapped vehicle in Squantum. City officials, emergency crews are staged on both peninsulas in anticipation of flooding issues.

Meanwhile, Quince Police say multiple cars are getting stuck in flooding water along Newport Avenue Extension. The 12:40 p.m. high tide has meant flooding on numerous coastal and inland roads. Video posted by Quincy Police shows a flooded and impassible Newport Avenue Extension near West Squantum Street. By 3:30 p.m., the city reported that water began receding slowly in flooded areas.

Newport Avenue Extension and the causeway on East Squantum Street are both closed due to flooding, police said.

Quincy Police have saved about 20 people from cars in flood waters. Video shows one person who became stuck in their car on Southern Artery after the road flooded and froze.

In Braintree, storm surges at Smith Beach has caused water to hit Edgehill Road, prompting police to tell residents to avoid the area.

Police say they have responded to numerous stuck vehicles and it is not safe to drive. A video at the Union Street rotary posted on the department's Twitter page show practically no visibility.

The conditions led to a crash at the Union Street rotary and minor injuries. Mayor Joe Sullivan said the town is dealing with near-whiteout conditions and visibility of 20 feet.

Flooding in Weymouth has destroyed a sea wall that stood in front of one resident's home.

Hingham Police were assisting a stuck van when another car passed by and also became stuck. Police say they have been tied up with numerous stuck vehicles and spinouts.

Down in Hull, police needed to use a backhoe to save someone from a second floor window.
