27-Year-Old Man Arraigned on Drunk Driving Charges; Troopers Found Small Opened Bottles of Vodka in the Center Console

An alleged 27-year-old drunk driver was arraigned on Monday in connection with a weekend crash in Revere that injured two people, including a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help a fellow motorist, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Nicholas Schaeneman, 26, of Chelsea, was arraigned in Chelsea District Court on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation.

Judge Michael Patten set bail at $15,000 and ordered Schaeneman to refrain from driving, remain alcohol-free, and undergo random alcohol screening in the event he is released on bail.

State Police Arrest Drunk Driver Who Injured Two Pedestrians, Including a Good Samaritan

The impact from the crash pushed the disabled Civic into two pedestrians who were standing near the disabled car. Both pedestrians were injured, a 20-year-old Lynn woman, who was the driver of the disabled car, and a 39-year-old Roslindale man, a Good Samaritan who had stopped and exited his own car in an attempt to help the stranded woman.

Troopers immediately began rendering aid to a 39-year-old Roslindale man who was located on the ground. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. A 20-year-old woman from Lynn was transported to MGH for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers at the scene learned that the Lynn woman’s vehicle was disabled on the side of the highway when the Roslindale man stopped to provide assistance, prosecutors told the court. The two were standing near the vehicle when it was struck from behind by Schaeneman, and the force of the crash pushed the disabled vehicle into the two victims.

While speaking with Schaeneman, troopers detected a strong odor of alcohol from his person and noted that his speech was slurred and his eyes bloodshot. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, Schaeneman allegedly blew a 0.2 on a portable blood alcohol test. He subsequently blew a .22 on a test performed at the Revere State Police Barracks after his arrest, prosecutors said. Troopers located two small, opened bottles of vodka in the Civic’s center console and a case of beer in the trunk.

Schaeneman was represented for bail purposes by Pat Kelly; he will be represented by Dan O’Malley at future court appearances. He returns to court June 9.
