SPERO - Educational Enrichment & Sports (middleschoolers)

SPERO’s mission is to prepare Boston's youth to be responsible members of our community.  We provide students with a supportive environment similar to that which we were provided in our youth. We hope that our students will soon do the same for others.

Age Group: -- Junior High students - (6th to 8th graders entry stage and continues through high school). Exceptions may be made for committed High School students seeking additional support.

Saturdays Group Sessions
-  Tutorial Time, followed by
-  Sports Time (Gym)

Ratio: -- Our goal is a student to small counselor ration. Initially, we hope to have a ratio of (3:1), and we want to ensure that the ratio remains no greater than (5:1).  We have received commitment from a number of counselors, and expect to target an initial class of 10-25 students. We expect this will increase by a manageable percentage each year.

Students:  -- Our goal is to work with committed, energetic students from Boston. We appreciate that the best chance we have to succeed is a situation where at least one of the student’s parents express firm support for the program. We have made contact with a handful of young men, but expect to add a significant number of students when the program officially begins. SPERO does not discriminate based on race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, or any other protected class.

Activities: -- Although tutoring and support of each student’s school work is the focus of our program, we understand it is important to offer the youth a number of activities. Sports will be an integral part of the SPERO program. We also hope to expose the students to many activities they might not ordinarily experience. To start, the SPERO volunteers took several students to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts and a Brockton Rox Baseball game. We hope to fully utilize the various historical, cultural, and educational opportunities in the Boston Area.
